Our Corporate Responsibility

Introduction
It is important to our clients and people that our business practices are responsible. When consulting staff, 92% said it was important to work for a socially responsible business. They also identified those areas that we have a clear responsibility to: our people, our communities, our market place and our environment.

In 2007 we took the opportunity to show how important it is to us that Allen & Overy is a responsible business by stating our commitments with our registered accounts in our Annual Report. In it we made clear who we believe we owe our responsibilities to and that we would report on our progress against the goals that we set. In our latest Annual Report which can be viewed on our website, we carry on this commitment by showing what progress we've made so far. We have reported openly and have set ourselves further goals for the future.

Our People
Attracting and retaining the most talented people from a wide range of backgrounds and motivating them to perform at the highest level. Our current UK trainee population represents 56 different universities – an increase from 40 in 2007.

Our Communities
Providing opportunities for all our people in every country to undertake pro bono work, community service and charitable giving. The value our people place in this work was shown by the 55,564 hours spent by lawyers alone on pro bono and community affairs work in the last financial year, amounting to £16.6 million.

Our Marketplace
Being a responsible and constructive participant in the global market for legal services and the local markets in which we operate. Over the last year we have undertaken a survey of the responsible business practice policies of our top 200 London suppliers to see how far their values and commitments are aligned with our own.

Our Environment
Measuring and understanding our environmental impact, educating all our people about it and setting ourselves achievable goals for reducing (rather than offsetting) it. We were one of the first firms to become a founding member of the Legal Sector Alliance, a group of 20 law firms who have joined forces to help tackle environmental issues collectively.
