Social Media For Job Hunting – Friend Or Foe?
You never know where you will find out about your next job. It could be via a friend, a professional contact, a newspaper or job site, or a recruitment consultant/ headhunter.
What about social media – does it help to let the world know that you are looking for your next career opportunity? We believe that having a presence on Twitter, Facebook and Linkedin can certainly help to raise your profile and is a good way to find out about jobs which are not accessible using traditional job hunting activity.
Our preferred medium is Linkedin and we now recommend that our clients produce a professional profile for this when we work with them on their CVs. We also think it is a good idea for you to join one or more of the special interest groups which are relevant to your occupation and the sectors which interest you.
It is not about saturating Twitter, Facebook and Linkedin with your comments, photos and career history. Apart from being very time consuming you can end up alienating the very people who may be willing to assist you. Be selective in what you do, make only constructive comments on discussion groups, and keep an eye out for opportunities. We have recently seen jobs promoted on Linkedin which have not appeared elsewhere. Some of these also require you to have a minimum number of recommendations on Linkedin.
P.S. For our legal clients we have teamed up with CompareLegal Jobs who are changing the way law firms recruit. See:
