John became a Partner in Wragge & Co aged 26, and progressed to lead first the firm’s Real Estate Group and then its Corporate Group, he was elected to run the firm during the severe recession of 1990/91. During his twelve years as Senior Partner, the firm grew from 250 people to over 1000 in its Birmingham office, developed a presence in London, an international practice, and grew its turnover from £13M to over £80M. In 2003, he was voted UK Lawyer of The Year for his “integral role in the transformation of Wragge & Co from a provincial Birmingham firm into a top national practice with an enviable FTSE 100 client base. This was a ten year odyssey that transformed the stature of the non-London UK legal market”. He has also been awarded only the second Lifetime Achievement Award by Birmingham Law Society and was the West Midlands Businessman of the Year in 2004. He retired from Wragge & Co in 2004 and has subsequently developed business and charitable interests.
In the charitable sector, he has particular longstanding relationships with Sense, the top 50 charity that supports people who are both deaf and blind, and Birmingham’s Hippodrome Theatre. He has personally raised over £3million for Sense and has helped develop the Hippodrome to its current position as the most popular theatre in the whole of the UK.
He was awarded an OBE in the Queen’s Birthday Honours List in 2007. |
